KUMITE

In kata training, we learn a wide range of offensive and defensive techniques employed against imaginary opponents. Kumite goes a step further by putting those techniques into practice against a real opponent. This gives the student the opportunity to physically block an attack and to also deliver an attack. This develops fighting spirit, timing, distancing, focus, proper breathing and body evasion. It also gives experience of fighting, which is useful should your art every be required for self defense. Kumite is organised into different types increasing in complexity as the student progresses.

Gary Moore scoring jodan Kizami Tzuki, 2003 SKIGB Championships

"During the practice, you should imagine you are on the battlefield. When blocking and striking, make the eyes glare, drop the shoulders and harden the body. Now block the enemy's punch and strike! Always practice with this spirit so that when on the real battlefield, you will be naturally prepared."
