STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2007
The student of the year trophy Was presented at the Christmas party on Saturday 1 December. The Junior Student of
the Year was awarded to Joseph Wightman. Joe passed his Shodan (black belt) grading in November 2006 and has kept
up the momentum and carried on training hard throughout this year. He has taken part in courses and
competitions to develop his karate further, showing that he understands that achieving black belt is just the first
step to becoming a serious student. As well as applying himself in training Joe also has good etiquette showing
respect to his seniors and setting a good example for the junior students.
The Senior Student of the Year was awarded to Stephen Boyd. Steve has shown great dedication over the year and has
a fantastic attendance record. He has also challenged himself taking part in the National Championships and Chilwell
Invitational Competition gaining invaluable experience. Through hard training and perseverance Steve has shown great
improvement.
Well done to all students who passed the grading examination held on 2 December. Special congratulations go to Simon Barnes,
Brian Bremner, Sam Davies, Jackie Lister, Daisy Raynor and Matthew Smith who passed Shodan (black belt 1 Dan) and
Dave Bell and Jamie Hinson who passed Nidan (2 Dan) examination in fine style. Remember to attend classes as often as
possible to be eligible for the next grading. In 2008 we will be introducing a mock grading exam at Chilwell to be
held a couple of weeks before the actual grading, so that monitor progress and give feedback io students.
SKIEF EUROPEAN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
As most of you are aware the British squad returned from Sardinia, Italy after taking part in the S.K.I. European Champs
winning 7 medals. The Championships are held every 3 years and 18 countries were represented. The British squad of 33
included 4 students from Chilwell Olympia: Jamie Hinson, Aidan McCarthy, Samantha Powell and Pasq Mura. It was the first
time Aidan has been selected which is a great achievement. Samantha Powell performed superbly reaching the junior kata
finals, taking the bronze medal with a well executed Niju shiho. Pasq Mura fought through 4 rounds to take the bronze
medal in the Masters (36- 45 years) individual kumite. All his fights were against Italian opponents.
The British Ladies Team (Nanna Asano, Kumi Asano and Hayley Campbell) took bronze beating a very strong Romanian team in
an exciting action packed match. Paul Mead (Honbu Dojo) showed skill and experience winning a total of three medals.
The event was well organized with good etiquette and excellent team spirit amongst the competitors. Shihan Miura
Chief lnstructior of Italy performed a demonstration of the kata Jitte, followed by bunkai (applications) and
kumite techniques. The Italian mens and ladies team performed breath taking demonstrations of kata (Unsu & Gojushiho dai).
The Italian team was very strong and dominated the event in terms of numbers of competitors and medals won. Italy rail-roaded Romania 4-0 in the Men’s Team Kumite final proving that team spirit and good basic karate triumphs.
Overall it was a fantastic competition and it was a good experience for everyone to witness karate of such a high standard.

COMPETITION ROUNDUP
We have seen yet another productive year in the competition arena. The 29th Shiro Asano Championships saw Demi Draycott
capture first place in the Girls Ju Ippon Kumite. This position was equalled by the Childrens Kata Team, who performed
JION to gain 1st place. Medals were also picked up by Jamie Hinson, Samantha Powell, Aiden McCarthy, Isaac Raynor and
the Men’s kumite team.
The British Championships in August produce yet more gold medals including two for Jamie Hinson (Ippon Kumite and Kata)
and Joe Raynor for Boys Kumite. The Men’s Kumite Team improved their previous 3rd place to gain 2nd place.
The Chilwell Invitational Championships were refreshing in the respect that so many young karateka entered the
competition. This produced invaluable experience for the students along with first time medals D. Raynor, J.Czikta
and J.Mohammed. There was also placings for all the usual suspects and a fine performance from Marcus Sen gained him
3rd place in the Mens Kumite.
It is vital that all students try to experience the spills and thrills of competition. It assists in the development
of the karate and is useful to try and put the techniques studied in classes into practice in a more competitive
environment against students who are unknown. All the competitions referred to above are available to all students,
and we strongly encourage all Students of all grades to enter the Chilwell Invitational Championship at the very least.

9th SKIF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
The trip to the World Championship was very well organised by Kumi Asano. After a long flight to Japan,
the squad spent three relaxing days at the hot spring resort of Hakone. Two days before the competition,
they transferred to Tokyo. Most of the squad together with some of the travelling supporters took part in
a light training session in a park. The next day, the competitors went to register at Tokyo Metropolitan
Gymnasium where the tournament was to be held. They had our final training session, which was taken by
Sode Sensei and Kobara Sensei. It was here that they learnt that there would be over 70 Countries taking part.
Samantha Powell and Jamie Hinson performed well in there first World Championships, with Samantha progressing
to the last eight in a very strong kata event. Pasc Sensei fought with the British Team who were eventually
beaten by the Japanese Team who went onto become the Champions, but not before they despatched both Brazil
and Switzerland.
Although the squad did not win any medals this time, the experience of competing at such a high level will be
invaluable for the future. Thanks to all who contributed to the fund raising for Samantha and Jamie.
MORE BLACK BELTS AT CHILWELL
The November 2006 Grading at Wilford Honbu Dojo saw the largest Dan grading for many years, showing that the
SKIGB is thriving. Chilwell contributed to the event by having five new black belts graded by Asano Hanshi.
Rachael Brough, Aiden McCarthy, Matthew Roulstone, Joseph Wightman and Donna Wylde all achieved their Shodan
grade and David Moore was promoted to Nidan(2nd Dan). Also a large contingent of the Chilwell Students took
their next grade, moving one step closer to joining the ranks of the Chilwell ”Yudansha”(Black Belt Holder).

STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2006
The tradition of the Chilwell Christmas Party continues, with the gruelling session by Asano Hanshi, followed
by the drink, food, and games of the party itself. One of the highlights is the award of the Student of the year,
which this year was presented to Aiden McCarthy for the Juniors and Donna Wylde for the Seniors. They had both
shown tremendous spirit throughout the year, attended most Chilwell sessions and also taking part in courses and
competitions, which culminated in them both grading to Shodan
COMPITIION RULE CHANGES FOR 2007
The SKIGB has decided to use mitts(fist protection) at the British Championships. This decision was made for safety
reasons and also to fall in line with the rules at international competitions.
In view of this, we have decided to utilise this protection at Chilwell classes. In the interest of safety, ladies
should also wear chest guards. The mitts should be white W.K.F approved as they can then be used at all SKI championships.
Please contact Pasc Sensei should you wish to purchase any mitts or any other karate equipment or clothing.
32nd ANNUAL SKIGB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2006 32nd S.K.I.G.B championships were held at Chilwell Olympia on 5th August. The Chilwell
squad seemed somewhat depleted at this event, but even so, we managed to come away with four 1st
Places. Winners were Aiden McCarthy(Boys 10-11 Ju Ippon Kumite), Jamie Hinson(Boys 12-13 Ju Ippon
Kumite), Samantha Powell(Girls 14-15 Kumite) and Gary Moore(Veteran Men’s Kumite). Other placing
were Samantha Powell(Girls Kata) and Jamie Hinson(Boys Kata). As can be seen from the results, we
may need to concentrate on Kata a bit more in future. Elaine White and David Moore unfortunately
went out in their kumite matches, but both put up very brave and spirited performances against
very experienced competitors. Rachael Brough gave a very respectable performance in her Kata category
and Marcus Sen put up a brave fight in both his individual kumite and in the Team Kumite, along with
Pasc Mura and Gary Moore.
After the interval, Murakami Sensei put on a demonstration. Initially
he performed kata Nijishiho, and then went on to give a demonstration of kumite techniques, ably
assisted by our own Pasc Mura Sensei. The demonstration captured the attention of everyone in the
hall (even the first aider was seen to be watching!) and needless to say, this received the biggest
applause of the day.
Marukami Sensei 6th dan and Mura Sensei 5th Dan
The day was slightly marred by the late running of the event, which meant that
the trophy ceremony had to decamp to the hall next door. All in all, another successful tournament
for Chilwell, but it would be nice to see a few more of our students enter next year.

2006 SUMMER SCHOOL AND GRADING
The 2006 Summer School held at the Honbu Dojo Wilford was taken by guest instructor Manubu Murakami
Sensei, 6th Dan, Head of the International Division of S.K.I.E.F. Murakami Sensei mainly concentrated
on kumite techniques, drawing from his vast competition kumite career in which he has been World
Individual Kumite Champion 3 times as well as picking up Team Kumite Gold Medals. The techniques were
mainly restricted to simple single blocking/ punching, but with the emphasis on the timing and distance.
We also studied many Katas including all Heien Katas. Marakami Sensei took time out to explain in detail
what he was trying to get us to understand and used many similes including using Beethoven’s 5th Symphony
to explain timing! Some of Sensei’s warm down exercises were new to everyone, and they certainly tested
the stomach muscles! everyone commented on how they enjoyed the course and that it had been an education
to see a karateka of Murakami's ability.
Dan gradings followed the last session on the 3rd day and 1st Dan Black Belts were successfully gained
by Andrew, Joe and Iaasac Raynor and Chris Moran. Gary Moore graded to 4th Dan.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN JAPAN
With the SKI World Championships due to be held in Japan in November, we are pleased to
announce that 3
Chilwell Karateka have been selected to represent Great Britain. Samantha Powell, Jamie
Hinson and Pasc Mura.
In order to assist in the travel expenses, we are holding another of our sponsored
events. This time we are going to have a sponsored kick/punch for karateka and a “superstars”
event for non karateka, so that brothers, sisters, parents, friends etc can also have a go.
Further information will be available shortly. Please use this as an opportunity to support
your fellow students in what is a very prestigious competition.
28th SHIRO ASANO CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 28th Shiro Asano Championships in May resulted in another clutch of medals for
Chilwell, with Aiden McCarthey(Boys Ju-Ippon 10-11), Jamie Hinson(Boys Ju-Ippon 12-13)
and the Childs Kata Team(David Moore, Jamie Hinson, Samantha Powell) all gaining 1st
Places. Charlotte Moran, Demi Draycott, Joe Raynor and Samantha Powell all picked up
medals for 2nd and 3rd places in their respective age Kumite categories. The Chilwell
B Kata team of Charlotte Moran, Demi Draycott, and Lara White made the finals,
finishing a very respectable 4th. For the first time, Chilwell entered a Boys Kumite Team,
which managed a 3rd place despite an injury to Joe Raynor(which he fully recovered from).
The Mens Kumite Team of Gary Moore, Steve Harper and Chris Moran secured 3rd place, mainly
thanks to an Ippon jodan ushiro mawashi geri by Steve Harper.
6th CHILWELL INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 6th Chilwell Invitational Championships in July saw the youngsters placed in all
events, with Samantha Powell(Childs Kata) and Isaac Raynor(Boys Kumite 12-13) gaining
1st Places. Andrew Raynor and Donna Wylde both enter the Senior Kumite compitiions for
the 1st time and gained some valuable experience in doing so.

It seems that Chilwell have a very strong younger element, who are all very keen to
enter all available competitions, but this is not replicated by the adults in the club,
so come on all you adults, don’t be afraid to try your karate out at competition level
(especially the Chilwell invitational, which was specifically formulated as a vehicle
for the inexperienced to gain experience before going on to the nationals). You may find
that you actually enjoy it!
SKI COURSES
There has been numerous courses this year with Asano Hanshi, all of which have provided
invaluable tuition of new techniques and also Katas that are not normally practiced. It
is nice to see so many Chilwell students on theses courses, but to those of you who don’t
attend, you don’t know what your missing. The same can be said of Asano Hanshi’s regular
Tuesday evening sessions at the Honbu at Wilford. Any grade can attend and we are lucky to
have a world renowned instructor on our doorstep. Please do not waste this opportunity.
10th EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004
The 10th Shotokan Karate International European Federation European Championships were held in
Kiev, Ukraine, on October 8th/9th. The Championships followed a 3 day course, headed by Kancho
Kanazawa, which all who attended thoroughly enjoyed, coming away with many new techniques and
combinations.
There was a large contingent of students from Chilwell Olympia Karate School, headed by Sensei
Pasq Mura (Kata, Kumite Team Kumite). James Hinson (kata), Sam Headland (Kata, Kumite),
Samantha Powell (kata, Kumite), and Natalie Headland (Kata, Kumite) all gained valuable
experience in this competition but failed to get amongst the medals, but it must be said
that the standards were very high and each student performed very well. Sensei Pasq has
remarked that he was very proud of his students and they were a credit to the club.
Sensei Pasq got to the quarter finals of the -65kg Kumite and regular guest instructor Sensei
Paul Mead won Gold in the 45-49 Senior Kumite.
As previously mentioned, the standard of the Karateka involved in the championships was, as would
be expected, very high,
and the British 5 Man Kumite Team, which included Sensei Pasq Mura, performed excellently,
gaining the silver medal after a very hard fought match in the final against the host nation, Ukraine.
In the final bout of the final, with both teams with 2 victories each, Pasq was one wazza ari
up, but his opponent managed to equal the score right at the end of the match. This led to an extra
bout, with each team choosing one fighter from the team to face off. Unfortunately ,the nominated
Brit, Steve Carless was unable to secure the necessary victory, which left the British Team with
a very respectable runner up position.
The British Team came an overall 6th Position,
in an event that was dominated by the Ukraine and other eastern European countries.

2005 CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Chilwell Olympia Karate School kicked off the annual Christmas Party with a training
session taken by Hanshi Asano 9th Dan. The session included some intersting reverse Kata's
that made the brain sweat as much as body. The training culminated in Hanshi Asano present
ing Samantha Powell with her 2nd Dan Certificate and Sensei John Crowther with his 3rd Dan
Certificate. Both passed at the latest Dan Gradings. Congratulations to both, especially
John who last graded 14 years ago! The party was held in the training room and was enjoyed
by all, although Steve Harper was dismayed to see his new Black Belt torn in two in the
tug of war (we don't know if Kumi Asano has managed to untie the remains from her belt yet).
Student of the year trophies were presented to Elaine White(senior) and Rachael Brough
(Junior), both of whom have shown dedication and spirit throughout the year and have
improved their Karate skills.
5th CHILWELL INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 5th CHILWELL OLYMPIA KARATE SCHOOL INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP was yet again a great success. The event was smoothly
run, starting on time and finishing slightly ahead of schedule. Chilwell had over 20 competitors entered in the various
categories, with many first timers. It was especially pleasing to see so many junior grades, both the younger ones and
the “senior” members of the club taking up the challenge to put to the test the skills learnt in the Dojo. As a result,
the list of names on the trophies is expanding as many of the newcomers went home clutching silverware. Jamie Hinson kept
up his dominance in the under 12 category, winning in both the Kata and Ju Ippon Kumite. Isaac Raynor gained 1st Place in
the 9th – 4th Kyu Childrens Kata with Demi Draycott and Rachael Brough coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Isaacs brother
Josheph added to the family firsts in the 12-13 years Kumite, with David Moore just behind in 3rd place. Samantha Powell
added to her collection with 4th Place in the Childrens 3rd Kyu+ Kata and 2nd Place in the Girls 14-15 Kumite. Chilwell
got a clean sweep in the Adult Kata 9th – 4th Kyu, with Elaine White(1st), Jacquie Lister(2nd), Brian Bremner(3rd) and
Michael Lord(4th) all gaining their trophies at the first attempt. Robert Reiter won the Adult 3rd Kyu+ kata with some
very strong Katas. Natalie Headland(1st) and Emily Hatton(3rd) represented the Club in the Womens Kumite, with some very
hard fought matches. Mentions to Marcus Sen, Michael Rooney and Sam Shaw, who fought very hard matches in the Mens Kumite,
an event that saw a very high standard of Karateka.
All in all, it was a very successful event, and many thanks to Pasq and all others involved for spending the time and
effort in organising the competition.
this will prove if the cahnages are beingmade
27th SHIRO ASANO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2005
The 27th Shiro Asano Spring Championships yet again proved a great success for Chilwell Olympia
Karate School. 1st places for the Childrens Kata Team ( Kardo Ala'aladeen, Jamie Hinson and Samantha
Powell), Jamie Hinson in the Boys 10 - 11 years Ju Ippon Kumite and David Moore in the 12 - 13
Boys Ju Ippon Kumite were the highlight for the Club, but the Adults Kata team of Emily Hatton,
Helen Marsh and Natalie Headland were unfortunate not to progress to the finals, missing out by 0.2
points. Natalie also picked up 3rd place in the Womens Individual Kumite, and spirited performances
by Mick Rooney, Sam Shaw and Marcus Sen in the Kumite Team provided valuable experience for the
future. The Championships ran really smoothly, the only hic-cup being an unfortunate accident
to a karateka from Scotland who dislocated his knee cap. It was nice to see members of the club
coming along to support the competitors.
SPONSORED KICK 2004
Another successful sponsored kick took place on Friday 1st October 2004. This was organised
to raise funds to support the Chilwell Karateka who were traveling to the Ukraine to compete
in the forthcoming European Championships. A slight change to the rules meant that each Karateka
had 30 seconds for each leg to complete as many Maiwasha Geri's as possible. Prizes were awarded
for the most number of Kicks in the junior section(under 16), the senior section and for the
most money raised. These were awarded to Stephen Wilson, Marcus Sen and Helen Marsh respectively.
The event raised nearly £500. A big thank you to all who took part.

4th ANNUAL CHILWELL KARATE SCHOOL INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004
The Chilwell Championships are growing every year, with the event now having the endorsement of
Hanshi Asano, who attended as Chief referee and also presented the trophies to the successful
Karateka. The day passed quickly, finishing ahead of schedule, mainly due to good organisation
which meant a good flow of events, leaving no time for the spectators to get bored.
Chilwell students continue to gain experience and trophies, with some new names joining the
usual recipients of the silverware, including spirited performances by Steve Harper, who in his first
competition secured third place in the Mens Kumite, and Helen Marsh and Marcus Sen who came equal third
in the Adult Kata. The younger members where subjected to Jiyu Ippon instead of
the usual Ju Ippon Kumite. This is to bring the competition in line with the rest of the associations
competition rules. Judging by the success of the Chilwell Karateka, this event is one that they
seem to excel in. For details of all placings, please click on the link below.

30th SHOTOKAN KARATE INTERNATIONAL GB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004
This was the first time the National Championships have been held at Chilwell Olympia, and apart from a
few minor problems with the PA, it was considered a success. Scheduled to finish at 6pm, it only over
ran by an hour, this mainly due to an injury to a Karateka which, as he was knocked out, and due to health
and safety reasons could not be moved until the ambulance arrived. This held up the proceedings by about
an hour. As a result of this delay, the Kumite bouts were changed from Ippon Han(3 wazzai ari’s) to Shobu
Ippon(2 wazzai ari’s).
Chilwell Olympia Karate School had another successful competition, with all the usual karateka’s picking
up trophies. For the boys, Jamie Hinson, Sam Headland, Joe Cook and David Moore gained trophies in the
Kumite events and David Moore came 4th in the Boys Kata. Natalie Headland(3rd) and Samantha Powell(4th)
were successful in the Girls Kata, with Samantha Powell gaining 3rd in the girls kumite(Natalie had to
compete in the Womens Kumite due to lack of entrants in her category).
Pasq Mura marked his debut in the Veterans event by winning both the Kata and Kumite and an exceptional
performance by Nic Capon in the Mens Senior Kumite saw him progress to the semi finals. The Team Kumite
also made the semi finals, but unfortunately could not repeat the success of recent years and so have had
to relinquish the title held for the last 3 competitions.
The day was rounded off by a Party held to commemorate 30 years of the SKIGB, hosted by Asano Hanshi.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP SQUAD
The British Squad has been selected by Asano Hanshi to represent Great Britain in the forthcoming
SHOTOKAN KARATE INTERNATIONAL EUROPEAN FEDERATION European Championships. The following Chilwell Karateka
have been selected:
Pasq Mura
Jamie Hinson
Samantha Powell
Natalie Headland
Sam Headland
Their selection is as a result of the hard work, dedication and spirit they have shown over the last few years
which has resulted in the improvement required to make the squad. We would like to take this opportunity to
congratulate them on this achievement ,which is a great reflection on the teaching received at the club.
2004 SUMMER SCHOOL AND DAN GRADINGS
The annual summer school was held at Honbu Dojo at Wilford and was attended by many Chilwell students.
The culmination of the course was the Dan grading, in which a large contingent of Chilwell Karateka
achieved their Shodan(1st Dan)Black Belt. Those members were Tony Bailey, Nic Capon, Jamie Hinson,
Jane Potts, Adam Rudock, Jonathan Finch, Matthew Lister and Peter Lamb.
Natalie Headland graded to 3rd Dan and Chilwell Olympia Karate School Chief Instructor Pasqualino Mura
graded to 5th Dan.

26th SHIRO ASANO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004
Chilwell Olympia Karate School had another successful competition. The younger members of the club led the way with
victories for Jamie Hinson, Joe Cook and Natalie Headland in their respective kumite events. The 12-13 Ju Ippon
Kumite was dominated by Chilwell with Kardo Ala'aladeen, David Moore and Sam Headland joining Joe Cook in the last 4,
thus making it a clean sweep of the event. Mathew Lister and Samantha Powell also picked up trophies. The junior Kata
Team of Samantha Powell, Joe Cook and Kardo Ala'aladeen were unfortunate not to progress to the finals, losing out
by 0.1 point.
The 3 man Kumite Team of Pasq, Susumu Asano and Mark Davis gained 3rd Place, narrowly losing in the semi finals in a
very close hard fought match. Sam Shaw and Adam Ruddock continued to gain experience in the 14-15 Kumite section and
Marcus Sen put up a spirited performance in the individual Kumite.
The general standard of Karate and level of spirit shown by all the Chilwell Squad was excellent and a credit to the
club, as was the enthusiasm and volume of the support.
WELL DONE EVERYONE

This is the last time the Championships will be held at Nottingham University. The next National Championships
in August will be held at Chilwell Olympia. This is a great opportunity for Chilwell to establish itself as the
home of the Championships, something which I am sure we would all welcome.
STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2003
This years "
STUDENT OF THE YEAR" awards were presented durIng the Christmas Party. There was a lot of competition for these awards, with many members
training regularly and with good spirit. The trophy for the adult student was presented to
HELEN MARSH-5th Kyu. Helen has one of the best attendance records and always tries very hard during the session. The award for the Junior
Student went to
SAMANTHA POWELL, who has had the trophy before. Samantha is one of the Karateka who has graded to 1st Dan this year and
she has continued to show the same spirit and dedication as she did leading up to her grading, attending regularly and attending courses and sessions at Honbu to train with Hanshi
Asano. Well done to both of you.

HAVE A GO
Members of the club assisted Pasq at a recent "Have a go day" at Bramcote Hills School, organised to provide school funds.
According to the school organisers, the Karate demonstration and subsequent "have a go", with members of the public was the best
activity of the day, so hopefully, we will see some new students as a result of this event.

SPONSORED KICK
A sponsored kick was held at Chilwell in order to raise funds to support Pasq's trip to Durban South Africa to compete in the 8th S.K.I. World Championships.
24 of the Chilwell Students took part and there were prizes awarded for the most kicks in the two catagories(Junior and Adult), and one for the most
money raised by an individual. The event generated much excitement on the night, and all participants performed well above expectations, as the people
who sponsored per kick will testify to!!
By an amazing coincidence, the highest number of kicks in both the Junior and Adult catagories was an impressive 159 kicks in 60 seconds! The winners were
Byron Crawford (Adult) and David Moore(Junior), seen here receiving his trophy from Chief Instructor Pasq Mura.
The trophy for the most sponsorship was awarded to Emily Hatton for collecting £102.10. This contributed to the massive total of £1030.51 raised on the night.
The success of this event shows how the spirit of the Chilwell Olympia Karate Club is growing and we would like to thank everyone for taking part. We would
also like to thank Nanna Asano for providing the trophies.

WE MADE THE NEWS!
Chilwell Olympia Karate School featured in the local Nottingham Evening Post on August 17th this year. The article highlighted the achievments
at the Summer School and Championships as detailed below. It's nice to be noticed!
29TH ANNUAL SKI-GB CHAMPIONSHIPS
9TH AUGUST at NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY
Yet again Chilwell Olympia had a very successful championships! Sensei Pasq Mura retained his Individual Kumite Title, winning
a very hard fought final against Howard Taylor of Essington, which was an example of Karate Kumite at it's highest level.
Pasq also achieved 3rd place in the Individual Kata. The team of Pasq Mura, Susumu Asano and Mark Davis gave Chilwell their 3rd
consecutive win in the Team Kumite event. In a competitive final against Walsall A, it was left to the final bout with Mark Davis
securing victory with 2 waza ari's to 1. Gary Moore returned to competition with a victory in the Veterans Kata.
In the junior events, Chilwell Karateka continued to shine, with 1st place for Joe Cooke in the 10-11 Ju Ippon Kumite
and 4th in Kata. Samantha Powell achieved success in both the Kata and Ju Ippon events and David Moore and Hannah Rose came 3rd
in their Ju Ippon Kumite. Emily Hatton, Jamie Hinson and Sam Shaw all competed well and were unfortunate not to proceed further than they did.
At the commencement of the finals, there was the presentation of the "Wilkinson Sword of Honour". This is presented every year at the
August Championships by Hanshi Asano to the Karateka who has "displayed outstanding principle and precept and has contributed to the ideals
of the Shotokan Karate International of Great Britain" and "the Karateka who has shown true KarateDo spirit". This year it was awarded to
Gary Moore.

CHILWELL OLYMPIA 3RD ANNUAL INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The competition was held on Saturday 5th July at Chilwell Olympia Main Hall. This is the third year the Championships have been held and
clubs from all over the country attended, making this year the largest to date. To facilitate this, the venue was moved to the main hall
from the first time. Sensei Paul Mead, 6th Dan, presided over the event and presented the trophies at the conclusion.
Chilwell had a good sized squad assembled and were unfortunate not to gain more trophies, especially in the Kata categories where the quality
was good but some minor mistakes meant early elimination. However, both Nic Capon and Joe Allman won their respective Kumite categories.
